Warung Kopi — Indonesia's everyday coffee stall

A warung kopi is a small, typically informal Indonesian coffee stall or shop — "warung" being the general Indonesian word for a small family-run stall, and "kopi" meaning coffee. They're common across Indonesia, from simple street-side stalls to slightly larger neighborhood shops, and serve as everyday gathering spots rather than formal cafés.

Traditional Indonesian coffee at a warung kopi is often prepared as kopi tubruk — coarsely ground coffee simply steeped with hot water directly in the cup, grounds and all, rather than filtered — sometimes sweetened generously with sugar. Indonesia's diverse coffee-growing regions, including Sumatra, Java and Sulawesi, mean the beans on offer can vary considerably from one warung to another.

A warung kopi is typically an unpretentious, low-cost space for conversation, often open long hours and popular with a local, regular crowd. As with many informal café cultures, ordering is simple and direct, and the social role of the stall is often as important as the coffee itself.
